When the extreme weather "Synne" hit Åna-Sira in 2015, the rising water in the river met a spring tide from the sea. The water rose sixty centimeters up the wall and currents make the whole building flow. The supporting structure is destroyed, and there is a danger that the entire building may collapse. To be prepared for todays extreme weather the three floors house was jacked up one metre above ground level on supporting pillars.

Now it will resist future floods and storms.

The simplicity of the cubic forms is playfully undermined inside and out. Interiors step gradually upwards from the ground-floor living spaces to create a series of shifting volumes and galleries

To sit down by the fireplace in the living room overlooking the fjord on a stormy day is a wonderful experience, you really feel the closeness to the nature. In Nordic residential buildings the fireplace plays an pivotal part, creating a focal point for everyday living and placing the idea of warmth at the hearth of the home.

The house manages to feel both light and open through a combination of spatial dexterity using double height spaces within the floor plan together with the skylight windows.

The huge roof windows create a house that is sustainable and economic in its consumption of energy. It largely light itself and on sunny days it keeps itself warm too. The use of plants are a part of the interior design and a lot of natural light makes them grow well. Plants are beneficial for our mental and physical health. Increasing a sense of calmness and relaxation, while decreasing feelings of stress, depression and anxiety, houseplants have the ability to boost our self-esteem and sense of self-control and even purify the air.

Everyone who enter the house feels imediately at home. There is a sense of peace, serenity and happiness. It is a total retreat for the senses.

Roof windows and the many inner walls of glass make the room feels larger than what is real. The interior draws inspiration from japanese architecture. All this makes the rooms communicate and generate a continuity that helps to comprend the project as a big space collegated and not as a sum of many small rooms. The view to the sky gives a lot of warms to the ambient.

The stairs in the house are projected to occupy minimal space. Bathrooms take little of the total area as well. The shower zone is the room itself, and showers from Gessi design gives you the relaxing feeling, as a spa does.

Light flows through the triple height ceiling over the staircase with a huge roof dome window, a part of the house which was originally the space where the fishing nets were hanging for drying after been washed in oil.

It is a living space that function in vertical. Each floor is associated to an activity in privacy and in intensity. Double height living space gives you the feeling of living in a industrial loft , as artists do in cities like London and New York. The lofty interior provides many spaces for retreat. Spend a quiet moment in a corner lost in a book, unwinding from the day.

Brings guests face to face with panoramas fit for a viking. One of the rooms are just big enough for one big bed under a huge roof window and it lets you sleep under the stars.

The new outdoor stairs in corten is prevaled as sculptures and let the house tells the story, before and after the storm «Synne».
